This is the biography of Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) , 8th President of the United States (1836-1840). Van Buren, of Dutch descent, the son of a tavernkeeper and farmer, grew up in rural Kinderhook, New York. The "Little Magician" presided over the worst depression in U. S. History.

About the author
Donald B. Cole born 31 March 1922 in Lawrence, MA is professor emeritus at Phillips Exeter Academy, New Hampshire, and the author of a number of books on early American history, including Martin Van Buren and the American Political System as well as The Presidency of Andrew Jackson. Cole is married to Susan Wilson, with whom he has four children, Douglas, Robert, Daniel and Susan. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Harvard University and served in the Navy during World War II.
