The Emergence of Lincoln is a two-volume set describing the political, social, and economic events in 1857-1861 leading up to the Civil War. It is the best source for information about the people and the events which threw our country into its greatest catastrophe. Volume 1, covers the political campaigns leading up to the elections in 1858, beginning with the end of the Mexican War; the Douglas-Lincoln Debates, Dred Scott decisions the economic panic of 1857, and the slavery issues leading up to the steps towards secssion. As with his previous two volumes, Ordeal of the Union, he also describes in detail the culture of the people and the details of the economy that make this work so valuable. More than any other volume, this is a snapshot of the country in 1857 and 1858.
