The book is a monograph of the artwork of the The Brother Hildebrandt (Tim and Greg) illustrating the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, specifically their three calendars produced for Ballentine Books, from the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, 1976-1978. The content of each of the calendars is reproduced in its entirety, accompanied by informative text, as well as reproductions of behind the scenes reference sketches and photographs for each painting. The final pages display the work for what would have been the forth calendar (1979), and some other Tolkien-inspired work that the brothers have produced since.
The back of the book contains a large fold-out poster of the brothers' painting "The Siege of Minas Tirith II", still attached and unopened

This fabulous art book has all of the Hildebrandt's Tolkien art from their three calendars published in 1976, 1977 and 1978. It has all of their Tolkien finished sketches, concept sketches and rough sketches that have survived the decades since the first calendar was published. This includes dozens of photos of their posing sessions in the seventies, so you can see the magic happen from beginning to end!
The fun-filled wonderful text is written by Greg Hildebrandt, Junior. It is seen through his eyes as a child remembering back to 5, 6 and 7 years old when he posed for all the Hobbits in his Dad’s and Uncle Tim's calendar art.
There are dozens of quotes from Greg and Tim. Some are funny and some are technical. All are worth reading.
The back section of the book has all of the Brothers Hildebrandt Tolkien art done since 1978. This includes their chess set designs, magazine covers and commissioned artwork.

The front and rear free endpapers are printed in red and textured and each displays an original fully rendered full-page drawing, signed by both of the brothers.
The illustration at the front is a September 11th commemorative image depicting a bald eagle, the American flag, a firefighter, the paramedic symbol and the twin towers of the World trade Center in New York.
The image at the back of the book depicts the character Treebeard from the Lord of the Rings, in an evocative pose.
Greg and Tim Hildebrandt
Greg and Tim Hildebrandt better known to the illustration world as "The Brothers Hildebrandt" began their careers 1959. The Brothers have worked on documentary films and thousands of illustrations for text books, children's books, calendars, book covers, posters, comic books, advertisements, movie posters, production design for films, collectables and trading card games.
They became internationally known for the original Star Wars movie poster and the 1976, 1977, and 1978 JRR Tolkien Lord of the Rings calendars. For over 50 years Greg and Tim Hildebrandt have received recognition from their fans in the genres of fantasy, science fiction, comic art, pinup art, western art, religious art, comic strip art, and sequential art. They have always been deeply grateful for all of their fans.
The Brothers Hildebrandt have worked for clients such as Marvel Comics, DC Comics, almost every book publishing company, Franklin Mint, Wizards of the Coast, Batfilms and Lucas Films. In 1999, Greg also began a series of 1940's-1950's pin up paintings, which he has titled 'American Beauties'. In 2001 Greg and Tim painted three tribute paintings to benefit the families of the fallen firefighters and EMS workers in NYC after the 9/11 attacks.
Tim Hildebrandt passed away in 2006. He is greatly missed by everyone who knew him, especially his brother.
