Allan Glanville

Professor Allan R. Glanville studied medicine at the University of Sydney and then undertook physician training at Royal Prince Alfred and Concord Hospitals, gaining his FRACP before undertaking further training in thoracic medicine at the Brompton Hospital in London and Stanford University, California, where he performed studies in the new discipline of human heart-lung transplantation, leading to the award of an MD. Allan was instrumental in developing the Lung Transplantation Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney since 1989 and was Director of the Department of Thoracic Medicine 1998-2019. He has regularly performed outreach clinics in other states to foster a mantle of care for lung transplant patients and provide equity of access to these services for all Australians.

Allan sits on a number of Editorial Boards including The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, The American Journal of Transplantation, The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation, CHEST and Seminars in Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He has held the roles of President International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) 2013-14, Chair European and Australian Investigators in Lung Transplantation and President Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand 2017-19. He has authored over 235 publications including senior authorship of the 2015 ISHLT Consensus Guidelines for Lung Transplantation, 2015 ISHLT Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome Guidelines, 2016 ISHLT Consensus on Pulmonary Antibody Mediated Rejection (AMR), 2019 ISHLT Consensus on Chronic Lung Allograft Rejection (CLAD) and the 2019 ISHLT Consensus on Restrictive Allograft Syndrome (RAS).

He is a Foundation Director of Outcomes Australia, Foundation Member ShareLife Australia, and Scientific Advisor to Lymphangioleiomyomatosis Australia Research Alliance as a member of the international Rare Lung Diseases Consortium. Ongoing research interests include definition of CLAD phenotypes, therapeutic strategies for community acquired respiratory viral infections and the pathogenesis of AMR. He has had a pivotal role in our understanding of the pulmonary virome as an integral part of the respiratory microbiome.

He champions excellence in delivery of thoracic medical services to the broad community through support of respiratory science, research and physiology and has promoted the involvement of young clinicians, researchers and allied health practitioners with a commitment to the principles of diversity and equity.
