"God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater"
God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, or Pearls Before Swine, Kurt Vonnegut's fifth novel, was published in 1965 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston and as a Dell mass-market paperback in 1970. A piece of postmodern satire, it gave context to Vonnegut's following novel, Slaughterhouse-Five and shared in its success.
Originally published in 1965, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is a wonderful example of Kurt Vonnegut's unusual satiric style interplayed with dark themes that can amaze and shock. This novel tells the story of a shell-shocked millionaire who lives by the motto "Goddamn it, you've got to be kind". Rosewater becomes so "kind" that he is considered to be insane, particularly by the people that are after his fortune. Mr. Vonnegut here again displays his concept of the simultaneously comic and tragic absurdity of modern life. He has written over twenty books and he is one of the world's most admired writers The hero of this comic masterpiece, Eliot Rosewater, a drunk, volunteer fireman, and president of the fabulously rich Rosewater foundation, is about to attempt a noble experiment with human nature... Vonnegut's funniest satire, a portrayal of greed, hypocrisy, and follies of the flesh we are all heir to. His funniest satire—an etched-in-acid portrayal of the greed, hypocrisy, and folly that infects us all.
