The Vampire Chronicles

The Vampire Chronicles is a series of gothic horror novels and a media franchise, created by American writer Anne Rice, that revolves around the fictional character Lestat de Lioncourt, a French nobleman turned into a vampire in the 18th century.

Rice said in a 2008 interview that her vampires were a "metaphor for lost souls". The homoerotic overtones of The Vampire Chronicles are also well-documented. As of November 2008, The Vampire Chronicles had sold 80 million copies worldwide.

The first novel in the series, Interview with the Vampire (1976), was made into a 1994 film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater and Kirsten Dunst. The Queen of the Damned (1988) was adapted into a 2002 film of the same name, starring Stuart Townsend and Aaliyah and using some material from 1985's The Vampire Lestat. In May 2020, AMC acquired the rights to both The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches for developing film and television projects. A seven-episode television adaptation, Interview with the Vampire, premiered on AMC on October 2, 2022, starring Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid.

Editorial Reviews

One of the contemporary world's most popular and influential writers, Anne Rice uses her extraordinary literary skills to transform genre fiction - horror stories, erotica, and historical romance - into modern classics that illuminate the big questions of mortality and suffering for our time. Born in 1941 in New Orleans, the future author was christened Howard Allen O'Brien after her father but renamed herself Anne on her first day of Catholic school. In 1961, she married her high school sweetheart Stan Rice and moved to San Francisco. After the tragic death of her daughter in 1973, Rice transformed a short story, "Interview With The Vampire", into her first novel, which was published in 1976. She has published more than twenty novels (including titles under the pen names A.N. Roquelaure and Anne Rampling), almost all of which have been bestsellers. Her credits include The Vampire Lestat, Exit to Eden, The Mummy and Violin.

In Anne Rice's classic debut novel, Interview With The Vampire, the 200 hundred year-old Louis Pointe du Lac tells how he became a vampire. After a devastating personal loss, Louis sought solace first in alcohol, then in the charismatic vampire Lestat's offer to join the "undead". But the "dark gift" of immortality does not free Louis from the grief and loneliness of living. While he has the power to satisfy his appetites, he cannot escape them, nor can he deny responsibility for his actions. A profound philosophical thriller, Interview With The Vampire transformed the Vampire of Bram Stoker's novel and Hollywood's movies into a myth for our age.

Interview with the Vampire

Interview with the Vampire is a gothic horror and vampire novel by American author Anne Rice, published in 1976. It was her debut novel. Based on a short story Rice wrote around 1968, the novel centers on vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac, who tells the story of his life to a reporter. Rice composed the novel shortly after the death of her young daughter Michelle, who served as an inspiration for the child-vampire character Claudia. Though initially the subject of mixed critical reception, the book was followed by many widely popular sequels, collectively known as The Vampire Chronicles. A film adaptation was released in 1994, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and a television series premiered in 2022. The novel has also been adapted as a comic three times.

The Vampire Lestat

The Vampire Lestat (1985) is a vampire novel by American writer Anne Rice, the second in her Vampire Chronicles, following Interview with the Vampire (1976). The story is told from the point of view of the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt as narrator, while Interview is narrated by Louis de Pointe du Lac. Several events in the two books appear to contradict each other, allowing the reader to decide which version of events they believe to be accurate.

The Queen of the Damned

The Queen of the Damned (1988) is a vampire novel by American writer Anne Rice, the third in her The Vampire Chronicles series. It follows Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat. This novel is a continuation of the story that ends in a cliffhanger in The Vampire Lestat and explores the rich history and mythology of the origin of the vampires, which dates back to Ancient Egypt.

In March 2014, a new installment of Rice's series was announced titled Prince Lestat, which Rice's son, novelist Christopher Rice, called "a true sequel to The Queen of the Damned".

About Anne Rice

Anne Rice (born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien; October 4, 1941) is an American author of gothic fiction, Christian literature, and erotic literature. She is best known for her series of novels The Vampire Chronicles, which revolve around the central character Lestat. Books from The Vampire Chronicles were the subject of two film adaptations—Interview with the Vampire (1994) and Queen of the Damned (2002).

Born in New Orleans, Rice spent much of her early life there before moving to Texas, and later to San Francisco. She was raised in an observant Catholic family but became an agnostic as a young adult. She began her professional writing career with the publication of Interview with the Vampire in 1976, while living in California, and began writing sequels to the novel in the 1980s. In the mid-2000s, following a publicized return to Catholicism, Rice published the novels Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt and Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana, fictionalized accounts of certain incidents in the life of Jesus. Several years later she distanced herself from organized Christianity, citing disagreement with the Church's stances on social issues but pledging that faith in God remained "central to [her] life." However, she now considers herself a secular humanist.

Rice's books have sold over 150 million copies, making her one of the most popular and best-selling authors of all-time. While reaction to her early works was initially mixed, she became more popular with critics and readers in the 1980s. Her writing style and the literary content of her works have been analyzed by literary commentators. She was married to poet and painter Stan Rice for 41 years, from 1961 until his death from brain cancer in 2002 at age 60. She and Stan had two children, Michele, who died of leukemia at age five, and Christopher, who is also an author.

In addition to her vampire novels, Rice has authored books such as The Feast of All Saints (adapted for television in 2001) and Servant of the Bones, which formed the basis of a 2011 comic book miniseries. Several books from The Vampire Chronicles have been adapted as comics and manga by various publishers. Rice has also authored erotic fiction under the pen names Anne Rampling and A. N. Roquelaure, including Exit to Eden, which was later adapted into a 1994 film.
