The Berrybender Narratives
The Berrybender Narratives is a four-book Western series by Larry McMurtry about an eccentric English aristocratic family's journey through the American West in the 1830s, exploring themes of identity, culture clash, and survival as they encounter frontiersmen, Native Americans, and the harsh wilderness. The series follows the family, particularly the strong-willed daughter Tasmin and her relationship with frontiersman Jim Snow (the "Sin Killer"), as they navigate the untamed frontier from Missouri to Texas.
Key aspects:
Plot: An aristocratic family's ill-fated expedition up the Missouri River, filled with adventure, humor, and dark humor.
Characters: Focuses on the clash between the refined, out-of-place Berrybenders and the rugged American frontier, especially through the relationship between Tasmin and Jim Snow.
Themes: Identity, human relationships, cultural clashes, personal reinvention, and the brutal reality of the American West.
Sin Killer
Sin Killer is a 2002 historical novel by American writer Larry McMurtry. It is the first, both in chronological and publishing order, of The Berrybender Narratives. Set in 1832, the book follows the adventures of a clan of eccentric British aristocrats and their retainers as they begin a hunting expedition up the Missouri River.
The title refers to the nickname given to frontiersman Jim Snow, a Berrybender ally who violently hates sin of all kinds.
The Wandering Hill
The Wandering Hill is a novel by Larry McMurtry published in 2003. It is the second, both in chronological and publishing order, of The Berrybender Narratives. Set in 1833, it recounts the Berrybenders' journey up the Yellowstone River into the Rocky Mountains.
The title refers to a sinister-looking movable hill in Native American legend. The hill is said to appear at scenes of great tragedy, and is meant to symbolize the ill-conceived and ominous choices the Berrybenders are beginning to make.
By Sorrow's River
By Sorrow's River is a 2003 novel by American novelist Larry McMurtry. It is the third, both in chronological and publishing order, of The Berrybender Narratives. Set in the year 1833, it recounts the Berrybenders' journey south through the Great Plains to Bent's Fort on the Arkansas River.
The theme of random and senseless death, often present in McMurtry's western fiction, is particularly powerful in this book; several characters die due to their own poor judgement or that of others.[citation needed]
By Sorrow's River received reviews from Booklist, Kirkus Reviews, and Publishers Weekly.
Publishers Weekly also reviewed the audiobook narrated by Alfred Molina.
Folly and Glory
Folly and Glory (2004) is a novel by Larry McMurtry. It is the fourth and last, both in chronological and publishing order, of The Berrybender Narratives. Set in the years 1835 and 1836, it completes the Berrybenders' North American adventure by sending them from Santa Fe to the disease-ridden and war-torn wilderness of New Mexico and Texas. Many characters are caught up in a whirlwind of death, madness, and bitter remorse.
The title refers to the shortsightedness of the Berrybenders and their friends, and to the courage with which most of them face the consequences.
It includes depictions of real life people such as Kit Carson and Davy Crockett as well as events such as the Battle of the Alamo.

Larry McMurtry
Larry Jeff McMurtry (June 3, 1936 – March 25, 2021) was an American novelist, essayist, and screenwriter whose work was predominantly set in either the Old West or contemporary Texas. During a career spanning six decades, he wrote more than thirty novels, numerous essays and memoirs, and approximately fifty screenplays. Films adapted from McMurtry's works earned 34 Oscar nominations with 13 wins, and his novels were the basis for several acclaimed television miniseries.
McMurtry's early novels, including Horseman, Pass By (1961), The Last Picture Show (1966), and Terms of Endearment (1975), examined the decline of small-town and rural Texas life; all three were adapted into major films. His 1985 book Lonesome Dove, often considered his magnum opus, won the Pulitzer Prize. The novel, which follows several retired Texas Rangers on a cattle drive from Texas to Montana, was one of the most popular American novels of the late twentieth century, and it was adapted into a television miniseries that earned 18 Emmy Award nominations and seven wins. The subsequent three novels in his Lonesome Dove series were adapted as three more miniseries and earned eight more Emmy nominations. McMurtry and his longtime writing partner Diana Ossana adapted the screenplay for Brokeback Mountain (2005), which earned an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In addition to his literary career, McMurtry was one of America's most prominent antiquarian booksellers. He operated bookstores in Washington, D.C., and Archer City, Texas, where he amassed a stock of nearly half a million volumes. In 2014, he received the National Humanities Medal.
